MYP - Humanities / History
There are many farang (westerners) in Thailand. Some come to live and maybe find work; others pass through as tourists. Some cling to their own cultural heritage; others seek to adapt and become as 'Thai' as possible. Blending in presents reflections by a variety of authors on the fundamental question of whether it is possible for farang to blend in with Thai culture. The authors present personal experiences and observations on this theme, including grappling with the language, playing golf and pool, participating in festivals, building a house, surviving illness injury and Thai-farang relationships. Blending in is not a recipe for blending into Thai culture: rather is encourages farang to approach this unique culture with eyes, ears, hearts, and minds open.
